The Magic Valley Amateur Radio Club
will be holding a VE session on Saturday, December 13 at 12 noon.
This session will be for anyone wanting to upgrade from their
current license or anyone wishing to get their first ticket. This
session will be held in the NAPA store on Kimberly Road in the
upstairs conference room. We will have signs directing you to the
testing area. Here's what you will need if you wish to test.
1. Two forms of ID, at least one
of which is a picture ID.
2. A photocopy of your license.
We will NOT have access to a copier so you will need to bring the
copy with you.
3. Any CSCE that is no more than
365 days old. (Certificates from passing test elements)
4. $14 for the testing fee.
(Please note..in January 2009, the fee will raise to $15.)
5. If you need any more info, contact
kelly@K7SU.com or call
208-308-5585.
The VE's for this session will be Dean
Etherington KI7CC, Jim Kennedy W6OUU, Hal Leeney K6YEX, Lee
Kelly K6ZVA. Any others who would like to attend for the sake of
learning the procedure is certainly welcome.
Meeting News of 11/8/08
I have to say I was thrilled at the
turnout at the club meeting Saturday. We had 27 in attendance.
That's a record! We also had at least 6 non-hams and most of them
were interested in getting a ham license. Well, we have good
news!
The Magic Valley Amateur Radio Club
will be holding a VE session on Saturday, December 13 at 12 noon.
For more information, see the previous post.
Many thanks to Jim Kennedy for finding
us the venue for the testing and to Dean Etherington for acting as
our lead VE. Your help and cooperation is greatly appreciated.
It is our hope that we will be able to
hold testing on a regular basis. If you plan on testing or know of
someone who will be, can you please drop me an email or contact me
on the air so we will know about how many to expect?
kelly@K7SU.com
___________
The club authorized $350 for door
prizes for the Christmas/New Years party that will be held
on Saturday, January 17th, at Loong Hing restaurant. Time will
be 6 p.m. Could you also let me know if you plan to attend the
party so again, we can have an idea on how many to expect. This
will be a no-host dinner. Order what you want and pay for it
yourself. We will hand out tickets for the door prizes.
_____________
It looks like Stephen (KD6CJR) and
Renee (KE6ULU) Feil will be the new EmComm coordinators for the
club. They will be taking over the position from Lee (K6ZVA) and
Bobbie (KD7JKC) Kelly who have been doing this since 1998 and have
done a great job! They want to step down so Stephen and Renee
(actually I think mostly Renee) will be taking over the
responsibilities. They will be assisted by Dean Etherington KI7CC
and Dunk Layton KD7JKB. Thanks all for pitching in to make this
feasible. I look forward to good things with EmComm in the Magic
Valley. I think we can also look forward for the re-initializing
of the 146.66 - 06 repeater.
___________
The club decided to do more research
and get more information before purchasing a tri-band beam for the
field day activities.
___________
The club decided to change the start
time for the regular Saturday meetings. The meetings will now
start at 9:30 a.m. on the second Saturday of the month instead of
10 a.m. This will start with the next meeting in December.
Please note, only the TIME. The meeting day will continue to be
the second Saturday of each month. We will continue to meet at
8:30 for those who want an early breakfast.
____________
This was a very productive meeting. I
think we made some great strides in the VE testing and the EmComm
issue. I appreciate everyone in the club and I think great things
are happening and even more will happen as we continue to grow.
Thanks to everyone for all of your efforts!
I hope to have an update on the
Tuesday evening 2-meter net at 1900 hours, Lee Kelly, K6ZVA, net
control.

Lee and Vickie wanted to be sure to thank all involved.
MVARC VE Program
(Posted 10/12/08)
In spite of the weather Saturday, we
had 18 in attendance. I was very pleased with that. We had a
2-tier meeting...one dealing with club business and another
dealing with a VE program. In an
effort to cut down on the length of each report, I'll send an
update on the VE program separate from this one.
First...
We had another nice donation of
equipment to the club. KB7YA, Larry Robertson in Gooding, was
very active back in the 1980's. He is the former owner of Gooding
Seed. He had some very nice equipment that he hasn't used in
years so he donated it to the club. The equipment is listed
here. I announced the list to those attending the meeting and
there is some interest in some of the items.
1. Kenwood TS-820 with matching
remote VFO. He said there was a small problem with the 820 but
couldn't remember what it was. With Manual and Original box.
2. Dentron MLA-2500 10-160 linear
amp. With manual in original box.
3. Autek memory keyer with Nye Viking
squeeze key
4. Kenwood HC-10 World Clock With
manual
5. Two speakers
6. Radio Amateurs Handbook from
1980's.
7. Radio Shack "Tune in the world"
book.
8. Yaesu FT-227 memorizer with
Heathkit power supply
9. Sigma SWR/Power meter
10. B&K rotary coax switch (coax comes
out of the back)
It looks like there are manuals for
all of this stuff.
Larry also has a 48 foot
self-supporting tower with rotor/controller and 3 element tri-band
beam. You can have it if you take it down and haul it away.
There was one party interested in
this. Anyone interested in this tower/antenna should call Larry
directly at 208-358-1225.
If you are interested in any of the
items (except the tower) please email me at
kelly@K7SU.com. There are
some interested in the AMP and the 2-meter rig. I'm going to try
to get some reasonable prices on these items and list them. For
items in which multiple parties are interested, I guess the best
way to handle that is find a fair price and those interested can
make an offer. The highest offer will get the item. All monies
from the sale of these items will belong to the club.
Second...
We had a good discussion on emergency
communications and the desire for theTwin Falls Police
Department. It was brought up by Dean, KI7CC, that these
relationships have been cultivated in the past
and that if anyone has dropped the
ball, it would probably be the local hams. It is our desire to
pick up the ball and run with it again.
Many of you know that Lee Kelly,
K6ZVA, and Bobbi Kelly, KD7JKC, have been working for the past
many years getting a working relationship between the club
(ARES/RACES) and local public service
agencies...specificly in Twin Falls,
Jerome, Gooding and Lincoln Counties. Due to a desire to
concentrate on other things and due to the time involved, they
have discontinued their work with the ARES/RACES and attending
meetings with the various counties. They still, however, will
continue to run and coordinate the Tuesday night 2-meter net at
1900 hours on 146.76. Lee and Bobbie have left some big shoes to
fill. This means we need someone to "pick up that ball" and take
over the work done by Lee and Bobbi. We need someone to fill this
position. This is not a position to be taken lightly. It is a
very important position and one that does require a fair amount of
time and dedication. This does NOT mean you will be alone in your
quest. We have several in the club who expressed interest in
helping to lighten the load...we just need a coordinator. If you
would be interested in taking over this position, please contact
me, Kelly K7SU kelly@K7SU.com
or Lee Kelly K6ZVA
leebobk@cableone.net . Each and every one of you...please
consider this very important position. We could even consider two
or three working together to lighten the load.
These were the big items discussed at
the meeting. I will send out a separate update regarding the VE
program.
73 and thanks. Hope to see you on the
air.

Baldy Repeater Update
(Posted 10/12/08)
The following Baldy repeater update from Joe Yelda, KF7AE
Hey everyone, just wanted all of you to
know that both repeaters(Baldy/Sawtooth) are now linked
together. What this means is that if you key up either
repeater the sister repeater will also broadcast
your transmission. If you add in the phone patch on Baldy
where someone can make a 911 call this make Amateur Radio
Emergency Services very valuable in an emergency or disaster
situation. So at this point we now have emergency
communications with a 5 watt handheld from Stanley to Twin
Falls including the Sawtooth Wilderness Area. One day
someone's life is going to be saved because of these
repeaters. Thanks again for all your help Joe Yelda KF7AE ps
special thanks to Chuck Robertson and Bill Marshall for making
this happen this past week!!
I'm Baaaaack.
(Posted 9/13/08)
I want to thank all of you for your thoughts and prayers while I was
recuperating from a motorcycle accident. I'm getting better
each day and plan to keep this web site up to date.
Our ham club met for its regular
meeting on 9/13/08 at Loon Hing Restaurant. There were 13 in
attendance.
I will be notifying the local
public safety officials regarding an inquiry they made to our club
to help local health and safety workers get their ham radio
licenses. On this same note, we will be having a special
meeting following the next regular meeting at Loon Hing Restaurant
for those interested in becomong VE's.
The club will be having a Fox
Hunt Saturday, Sept. 20th 2008. The FOX will begin
transmitting at 10 a.m. somewhere around the Twin Falls area on
146.52. The first one to locate the FOX will win a wooden call
sign handcrafted by Kelly, K7SU. Hope you can all join in.
It will be fun.

Wood River Club Needs
Help (Posted 7/17/08)
Hey Everyone, I know this is short notice but we are
being asked to provide communications for the Sawtooth Century
50/100 mile bike race from Ketchum to Alturas Lake and back on
August 16th. Todd KR6EK and Ellen Mandeville KC7UXS will be riding
in this race. Please let me know if you can help ASAP. I just got
back from running the Siskiyou ultra marathon in Oregon where four
amateur radio operaters ran communications for this 32 mile ultra
(175 runners) using simplex. It was very impressive to see these
guys nail down communications for an event of this size. The
experience of running race communications is invaluable for
communications in an disaster. Let me know what you can do Thanks

Club Meeting Agenda
(Posted 7/11/08)
Don't forget the club meeting coming
up Saturday morning at the SIRCOM center in Jerome.
The agenda for the meeting will
include but not be limited to:
Report from Lee, K6ZVA, on Emergency
Communication matters
Discuss Field Day 2008, suggestions,
etc. Field Day antenna project for next year
Activities for remainder of the
summer....Fox Hunt? Christmas Party? January?
Volunteer Examiner program
Swap Meet for next year...do we wanna
charge? Committee?
Western Days 2009? Special events
station?
Due structure...do we want it from Jan
1 to Dec 31 or from the day you pay?
Any other items of discussion.
Baldy Repeater Update
(Posted 7/11/08)
Hey Everyone, here is a complete update on everything we are
doing concerning Amateur Radio Emergency Services(ARES) in Blaine
and Custer counties. The phone patch is now operational on Baldy. To
access auto patch dial 1*1 and the phone number(all together)
Remember this is local calls only. To close auto patch dial 1*0. I
would encourage all of you to try using the auto patch and get
familiar with it. I want to hear who is the first to order pizza
with it!! We now have a website
www.wrarc.org thanks to webmaster Tom Perry AF7I. We are going
to post everything current on this website. Next, we now have a net
on Monday night 7:00pm on the Baldy repeater (147.18) via echo link
with the Southwest Amateur Radio Emergency Service net. Please check
in and you will find people all over central and western Idaho and
beyond. Their motto is when all else fails Amateur Radio works. The
Sawtooth repeater (147.14) has been working flawlessly and will be
linked to Baldy this summer. That means when you access one repeater
you are talking over both repeaters. That means coverage from
Banks,Idaho to Stanley and all of the Wood River Valley and Twin
Falls. And you have a phone patch with a Wood River Valley local
number. This is going to be invaluable for emergency
communications!!! We will send an email with details when we get it
up. I am working to have classes for amateur radio licenses in
November. I am also talking with the College of Southern Idaho to
have a class in January. Last but not least is how we are doing
financially. Actually not bad. We still owe site rent for the Baldy
repeater about $300. Chuck KX7ID feels that for about $500 we could
have a state of the art echo link on the Baldy site. I think this
should be a top priority for us. The suggested contribution has been
$100 yearly. I know some can send more and some can send less. Do
what you can. Remember that one day lives will be saved with these
repeaters and that really puts things into proper perspective.
Thanks,Thanks again for all your support Joe Yelda KF7AE Wood River

Club Meeting Update
(Posted 6/17/08)
At the club meeting Saturday, June 13th, we discussed Field Day,
which we will be participating in on June 28th. More
information HERE.
Lee Kelly, K6ZVA, is going to
continue to keep a list of amateur radio operators who can help in
case of an emergency. His net will be held Tuesday evenings at
1900 local time. Please check it. Also, the next meeting
will be held at the Southern Idaho Regional Communications Center in
Jerome.
We also discussed the swap meet
on May 24th. Please think of ideas and suggestions for the
next one. We will be looking into possibly holding it at the
new Veterans Center in east Twin Falls. We would have a
parking lot for tailgaters and also an indoor arena in case the
weather turns bad. We could also sell donuts, coffee and
other items to make money for the club.
Baldy Repeater Update
(Posted 6/17/08
We are calling the 147.14-74 repeater the
Sawtooth repeater. There are a number of reasons why we have a name
change. and the next time we get together I will give you the full
story. Here is the update on both repeaters. Baldy with the new
antenna is now covering Burley and Twin Falls. Gary W7FSI in Stanley
is able to work the Baldy repeater. On a mobile at this point we
have coverage from Twin Falls to Galena. The Sawtooth 147.14
repeater covers from 10 miles north of Ketchun to Stanley and west
all the way to Banks. Latter this summer we will link Baldy and
Sawtooth together via a uhf link. We testing the phone patch the
next two weeks and will send info when it is fully operational.

Baldy Repeater Update
(Posted 6/13/08)
Hey Guys, We wanted to let all of you know the Galena
repeater is now on the air. Coverage of the new repeater is from 10
miles north of Ketchum(mile marker 140) throughout the entire
Sawtooth Valley including Stanley and the Sawtooth Recreational
Area. Today a new antenna was installed on Baldy and mobile stations
from Jerome and Twin Falls were working Baldy with no problem.
Thanks again to Chuck KX7ID and crew and Larry and Brad Bosley for
making this possible!!! At this point the two repeaters cover from
Stanley to Twin Falls. This gives Amateur Radio Emergency Services a
whole new focus here in central Idaho. Tomorrow (Saturday) amateur
radio operaters will be running communications for the Sawtooth
relay(Stanley to Ketchum run) They will be using both the Baldy and
Galena repeaters for emergency communications along the entire race
site. Thanks again for all your support Joe Yelda KF7AE
Baldy Repeater Update
(Posted 6/6/08)
Hey Everyone, next week we will be putting 147.18/147.78
Galena repeater on the air. Hopefully it will be fully
operational for the Sawtooth Relay(Stanley to Ketchum Running
Event) Later in the summer we will have a full link to the
Baldy repeater with a open phone patch. As we speak we have
Echo Link operational on Baldy (via Tom Perry AF7I) We had a
London station come on last week and work several Hams in the
valley. The Baldy repeater will be getting a new antenna this
summer which should improve conditions. Chuck Robertson,KX7ID
from ARES has been a great help in getting the tech details
for this project together. Bill Marshall KC7UCV has also
helped greatly in doing the trek to the top of Galena and
Baldy with equipment. I will be teaching ham classes this fall
for new hams in the area. Those of you who have general and
above licenses I would encourage to be a VEC so we can give
exams after the classes. Last but not least we still have a
rental balance for the Baldy site. Those of you who have made
commitments and those who would like to help please
send whatever you can to WRARC,PO Box 2830, Hailey,Idaho 83333
We have really come a long way in such a short time. The Baldy
repeater went on the air February 07 and now summer 08 we will
see a Galena repeater linked with Baldy/with phone patch and
Echo link. Thanks again for all your support. This project
would not have happened without you. 73 Joe Yelda KF7AE ps if

Caldwell Hamfest/Swap Meet Update
(Posted 4/28/08)
Four of us went to Caldwell Saturday, 4/26/08, for the hamfest
sponsored by the Voice of Idaho ARC in the Treasure Valley. We
had a good time! The swap meet may not have been quite as big
as it was last year but we still found stuff we couldn't live
without. I picked up a very nice Astatic D-104 microphone.
I have plans for that baby but more about that at a later time.
Lee, AD7JS, picked up a dual-band mobile mag-mount antenna.
Kelly, W7NVQ, picked up some vacuum tubes for his vintage stuff for
a buck apiece! Bob, KC7QR, picked up a DOOR PRIZE! He
won a Radio Shack cordless soldering iron. We will probably be
going up again next year. It's getting to be a yearly
tradition. Hope more of you can make it next year.

Baldy Repeater Update
(Posted 4/22/08)
Hey everyone, here is update on the Baldy repeater.
The Baldy repeater is back on the air and ready for use at 147.18
MHz. It now has a PL tone of 100 Hz. Chuck Robertson, KX7ID in
Boise, worked on the machine for us. He
improved the receiver's sensitivity, increased the transmitter's
power to 25 watts and installed a new controller. Chuck has worked
very hard on our behalf and all of us should commend Chuck for
what he has done. We installed it on Baldy last Saturday. The
machine is working better than before but still needs some work.
The new controller is much more capable than our old one. The
upgrade is needed to support the link to the new Galena repeater.
Here are some of the features and commands that all users should
know about.
The following DTMF code strings will be useful.
DTMF String Feature
186
force a CW indent.
187
read back the time
188
read back the date
189
read back the date & time
191
Force a voice id.
185
DTMF tone tester. Key up, send the 185 and up to 16 more DTMF
tones. The controller will read the tones back. This is a great
test tool.
1387
Digital Voice recorder. Enter the code string, and unkey. The
controller will say "ready". Re key and speak a test message.
Unkey and the your voice will be replayed.
The link radios with Galena are now installed and we are still
looking for a June install of the Galena repeater (link with Baldy
will happen later). Here are some things you should know about.
From a technical standpoint a number of us agree our current
antenna has not survived the winter well. A new more durable
antenna is needed which will cost approx $800. The time to put
this up is this summer when we install the new link antenna to
Galena. Currently we still owe Sun Valley Company $700 in space
rent. So at this point I am asking all of you to consider what you
can send to support the repeater. Contributions can be sent to
WRARC, PO Box 2830, Hailey, Idaho 83333
I and everyone else agree when the Galena and Baldy repeater are
linked there will be more support financially. From an emergency
standpoint (amateur radio emergency service) we will have
emergency communications that Fire, Police, and Medical do not
have at the present time. When all else fails Amateur Radio works!
All of us have been hearing this lately with the natural disasters
happening all over this country and the world we live in.
We are still working on the phone patch. We
will let you know when it is operational and thanks again for all
your help!! Please remember that this repeater would not have been
possible without all your support!! I have spent a lot of time on
this project and appreciate all your input. Any of you can call me
anytime on my cell if you have any questions 208-721-0690 Thanks
again - Joe Yelda KF7AE

MVARC Club Meeting Summary
(Posted 4/13/08)
Good meeting at Hart's Restaurant Saturday...we had 18 in
attendance, including some new faces. We also got a lot
accomplished.
Kelly, K7SU, move into the president's position of the club.
Bob Castaneda, KC7QR, was elected VP of the club.
Rick Lang, AD7JS, was elected for another term as Sec/Tres.
Since the club seems to be growing, the members present at the
meeting decided to continue holding the meetings at Hart's
Restaurant.
Monday we will place the order for over 20 club vests. If
you want a vest, please contact Rick Lang, AD7JS, 734-7318. He will
need your money by Monday before he can place the order for your
vest. We should have them in time for the May 10th meeting so we
can hand them out there. Vest sizes are the same as your shirt
size. S, M, L, XL = $20. XXL = $22.50, XXXL = $25.
The club voted (unanimously) to pay for a porta-potty at the May
24th swap meet with club funds. That will cost about $90.
The club also voted (unanimously) to spend around $180 for a nice
3'x6' banner of the club logo which will be displayed at all club
functions and events.
If you plan to have items at the swap meet....PLEASE SEND ME A LIST
OF THE MORE INTERESTING ITEMS.
EMAIL KELLY
A committee was formed to act as the "program committee" for
meetings. The group will be in charge of presentations and programs
for each meeting. The committee consists of Jim Kennedy - W6OUU,
Kelly McGrew - W7NVQ, Bob Castaneda - KC7QR.
Field day, June 28 and 29.
The club will be holding Field Day activities at Harmon Park again
this year on Saturday, June 28th. We discussed the possibility of a
pot luck dinner but didn't reach a conclusion. There will be
several HF stations set up that day. Please consider getting
involved with this very fun event.
Western Days 2009. We talked about the club getting a booth at the
Western Days event in the city park. We have considered having a
station operating as a "special events" station. This would be a
GREAT way to get some club exposure and recruit new hams.
We had a couple of new faces in the crowd. They were
Richard Brodt, N7CID
Max Eldredge KE7SVL. Max just got his ticket about three weeks ago
after testing in Rupert! He is also looking for a good mobile HF/VHF
rig if you have one or know someone who does.
Thanks and 73
Kelly

Baldy Repeater Update from Joe Yelda,
KF7AE (Posted 3/27/08)
Hey everyone, just wanted to let you all know the status of
Baldy and new Galena repeater. The target date for Galena is June 08
and the id of the repeater will be Brad Bosley AE6DX. The frequency
(coordinated) will be 147.14/147.74. We are working on finishing the
phone patch on Baldy(just have to work out a filter for the phone
line) We will let you know when it is fully operational and will ask
all of you to try it out. Our yearly bill to Sun Valley is now due
and I am asking all of you who have made a commitment to send your
donations to Wood River Amateur Radio Club,PO Box 2830,Hailey,Idaho
83333 ASAP. Sun Valley Company has really helped up to get this
repeater on the air. I think all of you have realized now how
important the repeaters are to emergency communications. When the
Galena repeater is on the air and linked to Baldy we will have
communications from Stanley to Twin Falls!!! Thanks again to all of
you for you support!! It would not have been possible without all of
you. Joe Yelda KF7AE
